Isfahan is located in the center of Iran. Isfahan is nearly
as old as Iran herself. Because of its faverable geographical
situation at the center of Iranian plateau, the river Zayandeh Rud
and its fertile soil, has always been an important city.
During the Saljuk ( 11th Century A.D. ) and Safavid ( 17th Centry A.D. )
periods, Isfahan had been the capital of Iran. Most of the
historical buildings in the city were founded by the kings of
these two dynasties.

The sluice gates dam the river, the Zayandeh Rud, and make posible the
irrigation of Isfahan. The bridge was built by Shah Abbas II in the
middle of 17th Century.

The Great Square of Isfahan, The Maidan-e-Naghsh-e-Jahan,
To the far end of which the mosque of the Shah is joined.
The stands at an angle of 45 degree to the square because of the
requirement for it to face towards the kaaba. In the left hand corner
of the picture the Cupola of Sheikh Lotfullah can be seen. While at the
right is that of the palace of Ali Kapu. A noteworthy feature of the
town is the planning of its tightly packed houses, Each one of which has
an inner countyard forming an enclosed garden.
